A new service is being tested by Lufthansa airlines to enable its passengers to offset the carbon emissions of their air travel directly onboard. This service would be made available for all Lufthansa passengers flying to and from Munich on short and medium-haul flights while the service also has internet connectivity.
Via a range of options available through the onboard entertainment system, the passengers would choose how to offset the CO2 emissions of their flight.
The above-cited services can be accessed for free through the internet available onboard. Passengers can navigate to one of three options available for offsetting using a slider.
These options are namely:
1) High-quality carbon offset projects run by the non-profit organization myclimate.
2) Sustainable Aviation Fuel made from biogenic residue.
3) Combination of both
For CO2-neutral air travel, this new service incorporates the technology of the “Compensaid” platform, which was developed by Lufthansa Innovation Hub back in 2019.
Being Lufthansa Group’s digital platform for CO2-neutral flying, it was tested as a prototype in 2019 and is also available as an offer for Lufthansa Group’s corporate customers via the Compensaid Corporate Program.
Lufthansa Cargo also offers a CO2-neutral freight product based on Compensaid technology.
Lufthansa Group’s fuel experts purchase the certified fuel globally and feed it into Lufthansa flight operations while the digital platform was developed in cooperation with these experts.
Another venture of the company that offers a CO2 compensation platform is named “Squake”, which enables travel and transport companies to choose sustainability initiatives from a bank from partners and projects.
