On Friday, India confirmed that due to “accidental firing” caused by “a technical malfunction”, a missile had entered Pakistan from India on Wednesday while it happened in the “course of routine maintenance”. According to media reports, the missile was BrahMos.
The Ministry of Defence, in a statement, said that the Government of India has taken a serious view while a high-level court of inquiry has been ordered.
The MoD further added that although the incident was deeply regrettable as the missile landed in an area of Pakistan, it is also a piece of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident.
The missile is believed to be a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile by the sources in the defence and security establishment, although the defence ministry did not clarify it.
BrahMos is equipped by both the Indian Army and the IAF, while besides surface-to-surface missiles, the IAF also has the air-launched variant of the missile, which can be fired from Su 30 MKI.
The flight path taken by the BrahMos depends on the target, sources explain. When the BrahMos is a ship-launched variant, the missile cruises just above the sea, but In the surface-to-surface version, the missile can go up to several feet and then cruise at various levels, depending on the sea on how far the target is.
