The Ministry of Defence has announced the signing of a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on 10 March 2023, for the procurement of six Dornier-228 aircraft, at a cost of Rs 667 crore. The Indian Air Force (IAF) will benefit from the new additions, which will be utilised for Route Transport Roles and communication duties, as well as training transport pilots of the IAF.
The aircraft, equipped with an upgraded fuel-efficient engine and a five-bladed composite propeller, is an ideal fit for short haul operations, particularly from semi-prepared and short runways in the North East and island chains of India. With the inclusion of these six aircraft, the IAF’s operational capabilities in remote areas will be further strengthened.
