India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, has called on the country’s youth to spearhead the establishment of new companies and research and development (R&D) establishments to help India achieve its vision of becoming one of the world’s most powerful nations. Speaking at the Field Marshal SHFJ Manekshaw memorial lecture at Symbiosis International (Deemed) University in Pune, Maharashtra, on 28 March 2023, Singh emphasised the government’s focus on promoting the latest technology and ease of doing business, which has laid the groundwork for a strong and self-reliant “New India.”
Singh highlighted that technology is the most critical component for business set-up. Significant reforms have been made in R&D establishments such as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He also emphasised the government’s focus on linking academia with industry, ensuring research from universities reaches the industry to develop state-of-the-art technologies and products.
The Minister of Defence urged India’s youth to take advantage of the government’s policies and become wealth creators, contributing to the nation’s growth story. He likened the energy of India’s youth to nuclear energy, emphasising the importance of direction for its effective utilisation. Singh also spoke about the steps taken to promote transparency and curb insider trading in retail.
Singh stressed the critical role of management in the progress of a nation, terming it the most crucial factor in socioeconomic development. He concluded his lecture by underlining the need for young minds to become drivers of change, highlighting their pivotal role in India’s success story. The lecture was part of the G-20 festival of the Thinkers Lecture Series.
