DRDO & Indian Navy Achieve Successful Maiden Flight Trial Of BMD Interceptor Missile From Naval Platform

By Staff Correspondent

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy have made a significant breakthrough in missile defence technology with a successful maiden flight trial of a sea-based endo-atmospheric interceptor missile off the coast of Odisha in the Bay of Bengal. The missile was able to engage and neutralise a hostile ballistic missile threat, making India part of the elite group of nations that possess Naval BMD capability and raising its stature in the global defence arena.

DRDO has previously demonstrated its expertise in land-based BMD systems, which can neutralise ballistic missile threats from adversaries. This recent achievement in sea-based interceptor technology represents a significant advancement in India’s defensive capabilities.

In recognition of this milestone, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, Indian Navy, and the industry involved in successfully demonstrating ship-based Ballistic Missile defence capabilities. Secretary DDR&D and Chairman DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat also lauded the teams responsible for designing and developing the missile, emphasising that the nation has achieved self-reliance in developing highly complex network-centric anti-ballistic missile systems. This achievement marks a significant step towards India’s goal of becoming a key player in the global defence industry.
