In a momentous agreement, IndiGo, a prominent Indian low-cost airline, has unveiled plans to acquire 500 Airbus aircraft, marking a record deal within the aviation sector. This surpasses the recent 470-aircraft contract inked by national carrier Air India, putting IndiGo in the spotlight of global aviation.
The unprecedented procurement of 500 units from the A320 Family cements this deal as “the largest singular acquisition pact in the annals of commercial aviation”, according to a public disclosure by Airbus.
In the wake of this landmark transaction, the total number of Airbus aircraft earmarked for IndiGo soars to a staggering 1,330, consolidating the airline’s status as the most significant A320 Family customer globally, an accolade highlighted by Airbus.
Airbus went on to share comments by IndiGo’s chief, Pieter Elbers, who emphasized the game-changing implications of this colossal order. With the airline’s order book now expanded to nearly 1,000 aircraft stretching into the coming decade, Elbers underlined the potential for IndiGo to significantly accelerate India’s economic development, societal integration, and internal mobility.
The notable deal represents a significant endorsement of Airbus, while bolstering IndiGo’s plans to strengthen its robust footprint within the dynamic Indian civil aviation market.
