By Staff Correspondent

Amidst the ongoing reforms within the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), an important decision was made by the Centre on Monday to extend the service tenure of Dr. Samir V Kamat, the current chief of the research agency. The government’s order granting a one-year extension to Dr. Kamat, who serves as the Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development and the Chairman of DRDO, signifies recognition of his invaluable contribution to the organization. Dr. Kamat, who was originally scheduled to retire in June, will now continue in his role until 31st May 2025. Notably, in a departure from the norm in the organization, Dr. Kamat did not initiate the process for his own service extension.

A highly esteemed scientist, Dr. Kamat holds a distinguished academic background, having earned his B. Tech (Hons) in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1985 and a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from The Ohio State University, USA in 1988 before joining DRDO in 1989. Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in steering numerous critical materials programs within DRDO. His expertise has been instrumental in the development of various advanced materials essential for naval, aero-engine, missile, and armor applications undertaken by DRDO laboratories. His contributions encompass a wide array of projects, including the development of high-strength steels for naval ship hulls, high-temperature titanium alloys for aero-engines, tungsten heavy alloys for kinetic energy penetrators, and stealth materials for airborne and naval platforms.

Dr. Kamat’s leadership extends beyond materials development, as he has also led the design and implementation of innovative naval systems such as advanced lightweight torpedoes, anti-torpedo decoy systems, autonomous underwater vehicles, advanced sonar systems for ships, and fuel cell-based air-independent propulsion systems for submarines. His professional achievements have earned him recognition from prestigious institutions and organizations, including his induction as a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and the Institution of Engineers India (IEI). Furthermore, he has been honoured with accolades such as the Distinguished Alumni Award from IIT Kharagpur, the Metallurgist of the Year Award from the Ministry of Steel, and the Scientist of the Year Award from DRDO.

Dr. Samir V Kamat’s extended tenure signifies a continuation of his dedicated service and exceptional leadership within DRDO. His proven track record of accomplishments and contributions to the advancement of defence research and development in India makes him a valuable asset to the organization. Through his continued guidance and expertise, DRDO is poised to further strengthen its capabilities and make significant strides in technological innovation under his capable stewardship.
