Royal Air Force & IAF: Enhancing Multilateral Cooperation Through Exercise Tarang Shakti

By Chaitali Bag

The recent participation of a Royal Air Force (RAF) contingent, consisting of 130 personnel and an impressive array of aircraft—including six Eurofighter Typhoons, two A330 Voyager air-to-air refuellers, and an A-400M military transport aircraft—in Exercise Tarang Shakti at Sulur Air Force Station, Tamil Nadu, underscores the significance of multilateral military cooperation in today’s complex global landscape. This exercise not only marked a pivotal moment for the Indian Air Force (IAF) as its inaugural multilateral air exercise, but it also facilitated deeper integration and the sharing of best practices among allied air forces.

British High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron, celebrated the event, highlighting the importance of security and defence collaboration that spans across air, land, and sea. The joint exercises are critical to preserving stability and enhancing prosperity within the Indo-Pacific region. This sentiment was echoed by Captain Neil Jones, Air Adviser to the British High Commission, who noted that the ability to train alongside multiple nations presents unique challenges while fostering the integration of tactics across various specializations.

The RAF’s participation in Exercise Tarang Shakti follows their recent involvement in Exercise Pitch Black in Australia, demonstrating a continued commitment to collaboration with allies. This sequence of joint exercises not only strengthens operational capabilities but also highlights the growing relationship between the RAF and IAF. Notably, the IAF’s previous participation in the RAF-led Exercise Cobra Warrior last year exemplifies the evolving partnership.

As Wing Commander Robertson, Officer Commanding XI (F) Squadron, remarked, the exercise reflects a concerted effort to enhance interoperability with other air forces. By engaging in such exercises, the RAF reinforces its operational capabilities while contributing to broader regional security dynamics. The UK’s long-standing commitment to these multilateral exercises indicates its recognition of the strategic importance of fostering lasting relationships in the Indo-Pacific region, thus ensuring a cohesive response to emerging security challenges.

In essence, Exercise Tarang Shakti serves as a crucial platform for the RAF and allied air forces to refine their operational coherence, showcasing their resolve to maintain a robust and cooperative presence in a rapidly evolving geopolitical environment. This collaboration not only strengthens military ties but also contributes to the stability and security essential for the prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region.
