Employment of Army Assault K9 Zac in Joint Exercise Mitra Shakti

By Staff Correspondent

The integration of canines into military operations has proven to be an invaluable asset, particularly in urban environments where the complexities of combat demand specialized skills and agility. One such exemplary asset is Army Assault K9 Zac, a Belgian Malinois, who has been deployed by the Indian Army during the Joint Exercise Mitra Shakti. This exercise, conducted in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Army, underscores the evolving role of military canines in enhancing operational effectiveness and ensuring mission success.

K9 Zac, trained at the Dog Training Faculty of the Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) Centre and College in Meerut, is a testament to the rigorous standards set for military canines. At just two and a half years old, Zac has undergone extensive training in specialized tactical operations, including Fighting in Built-Up Areas (FIBUA), Counter-Insurgency Operations (CASO), Search and Assault Operations (SADO), jungle searches, and area sanitization. This diverse skill set enables Zac to perform effectively in various challenging environments, making him an essential component of modern military operations.

One of the standout features of K9 Zac’s training is his proficiency in advanced tactical skills such as Laser Guided Assault and Weapon Retrieval. These capabilities significantly enhance the operational effectiveness of the canine unit, allowing for precise engagement in high-stakes scenarios. Moreover, Zac has been equipped with Radio Guided Directional Control, which, in conjunction with live video transmission from head-mounted tactical cameras, facilitates real-time surveillance. This technological integration not only augments the stealth and attack capabilities of these assault K9s but also provides critical situational awareness to tactical teams.

The deployment of K9 Zac in active Counter-Insurgency (CI) and Counter-Terrorism (CT) operations as a first responder has proven to be a game-changer for the Indian Army. His presence on the battlefield offers a definitive upper hand, enabling forces to navigate complex urban terrains with enhanced efficiency and safety. The K9 Detachment involved in Ex Mitra Shakti, comprising Major Rishi Sharma, Assistant Dog Trainer Pranjal Sakiya, and K9 Zac, exemplifies the collaborative spirit of this joint exercise.

Throughout Ex Mitra Shakti, K9 Zac is set to participate in a multitude of activities, including house interventions, jungle searches, laser-guided assaults, and area sanitization operations. The K9 Det Commander, Major Rishi Sharma aptly describes Zac as “a force multiplier and first responder in the majority of related tactical operations.” This statement encapsulates the profound impact that K9 Zac has on operational effectiveness, emphasizing his role as an indispensable member of the military team.

The employment of Army Assault K9 Zac in Joint Ex Mitra Shakti highlights the significant advancements in military canine training and their integration into modern warfare. With their specialized skill sets and the incorporation of cutting-edge technology, canines like Zac are reshaping the landscape of military operations. As the Indian Army continues to leverage the capabilities of these remarkable animals, the future of tactical operations will undoubtedly be enhanced by their presence, ensuring greater safety and success in the face of evolving threats.
