Strategic Partnership Between EDGE & Indra: A Leap Towards Advanced Radar Technologies

By Staff Correspondent

In a significant stride towards enhancing the technological capabilities of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), EDGE Group and Indra Sistemas have formalized a joint venture named PULSE. This agreement was signed in the presence of Margarita Robles, the Spanish Minister of Defence, and is poised to align with both Indra’s strategic vision and EDGE’s commitment to developing sovereign capabilities that bolster innovation in high-tech production. This collaborative endeavour not only positions PULSE at the forefront of next-generation radar technologies but also reflects a broader ambition to elevate the global defence landscape.

PULSE, headquartered in Abu Dhabi, is envisaged as a pivotal player in the realm of radar technology. The establishment of this joint venture emerges from a solid foundation of collaboration between EDGE and Indra, which began in 2023. According to Hamad Al Marar, Managing Director and CEO of EDGE, the formation of PULSE signifies a transformative milestone in advancing capabilities that address critical defence gaps. This statement encapsulates the essence of PULSE’s mission: to leverage innovation and technology transfer to foster operational excellence and bolster global security.

The potential of PULSE is underscored by a robust order pipeline, with confirmed customer orders for advanced radar systems from various markets worldwide. This impressive portfolio not only demonstrates the immediate demand for cutting-edge radar technology but also highlights the strategic foresight of both organizations in identifying and responding to market needs. Furthermore, the joint venture will encompass the construction of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Abu Dhabi, reflecting a commitment to local production and the cultivation of skilled talent within the region.

As articulated by Marc Murtra, Chairman of Indra, this partnership signifies a significant step in expanding the global footprint of Indra while reinforcing its valued relationship with EDGE. The collaborative effort is designed to include advanced research infrastructure, laboratories, and testing facilities, all situated within the UAE. Such resources will elevate the technological capabilities available in the region and catalyze further innovation.

PULSE is set to operate through a two-tier structure that enhances its operational effectiveness. The first company will operate under a partnership of 50.01% Indra and 49.99% EDGE, focusing on the development, design, integration, sales, and maintenance of advanced radar systems. Meanwhile, the second entity constituted with greater local ownership at 50.01% EDGE and 49.99% Indra, will specialize in the manufacturing of these radar systems. This strategic division not only streamlines operations but also facilitates the transfer of knowledge and skills to Emirati professionals, contributing to the UAE’s goal of developing local talent in high-tech industries.

The overarching aim of this joint venture transcends commercial aspirations; it encompasses a commitment to enhancing sovereign production capabilities in the UAE. With plans to train and develop skilled local professionals, PULSE is poised to create a new generation of engineers, technical experts, and business leaders equipped to navigate the complexities of contemporary defence technology.

The evolution of next-generation radar technology is poised for a significant transformation, driven by strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing local research and development capabilities. Central to this endeavour is the establishment of advanced research infrastructures, modern laboratories, and sophisticated testing facilities. The acquisition of cutting-edge technologies, collaboration with leading experts, and the implementation of specialized training programs for research teams are integral components of this initiative. The EDGE Group, in partnership with Indra, is at the forefront of this movement, as articulated by EDGE Group Managing Director and CEO, Hamad Al Marar.

Al Marar emphasizes that the collaborative project known as PULSE exemplifies the power of partnership in the defence sector. By merging the expertise of EDGE and Indra, the initiative aims to design, develop, and manufacture next-generation radar systems, thereby positioning the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a global hub for radar innovation. This strategic vision not only focuses on enhancing the UAE’s industrial capacity in advanced technologies but also seeks to establish sovereign capabilities that drive self-reliance and innovation on a global scale. The commitment to creating advanced production facilities underscores the UAE’s ambition to shape the future of defence technology across air, land, and maritime domains.

José Vicente de los Mozos, CEO of Indra, further elucidates the ambitious plans for a state-of-the-art factory in Abu Dhabi, equipped with the most sophisticated technology to meet the anticipated demand for innovative radar systems. This new facility will facilitate the transformation of the defence business towards a more international profile, aligning with Indra’s strategic initiative, “Leading the Future.” The establishment of the PULSE entity, with its preferential rights over current and future radar orders, highlights the strategic advantages inherent in this collaboration, as it aims to unlock new opportunities in high-potential international markets.

Launched in November 2019, EDGE has rapidly emerged as one of the world’s leading advanced technology groups, dedicated to developing agile, bold, and disruptive solutions for defence and beyond. The organization’s commitment to innovation is evident in its focus on bringing breakthrough products and services to market with greater speed and efficiency. By consolidating over 35 entities into six core clusters—Platforms & Systems, Missiles & Weapons, Space & Cyber Technologies, Trading & Mission Support, Technology & Innovation, and Homeland Security—EDGE positions itself as a catalyst for change and transformation within the defence sector.

Furthermore, EDGE’s emphasis on the adoption of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies is crucial for developing sovereign capabilities that not only cater to global export demands but also ensure national security. By collaborating with front-line operators and international partners, EDGE is leveraging advanced technologies such as autonomous capabilities, cyber-physical systems, advanced propulsion systems, robotics, and smart materials. This convergence of research and development, emerging technologies, digital transformation, and military capabilities enables EDGE to create disruptive solutions tailored to the specific needs of its customers.

The strategic partnership between EDGE Group and Indra through the PULSE initiative represents a significant leap forward in the development of next-generation radar technology. By investing in advanced research infrastructures and fostering collaboration with industry leaders, the UAE is on track to become a global leader in radar innovation and defence technology. This initiative not only enhances the UAE’s industrial capabilities but also contributes to the broader goal of self-reliance and innovation, ultimately shaping the future of defence technology on a global scale.
