The International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) and the Naval Defence and Maritime Security Exhibition (NAVDEX) 2025 commenced with remarkable success on February 17, 2025, in Abu Dhabi. Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, the opening day set the tone for a record-breaking edition of these globally renowned defence exhibitions. With the announcement of AED 3.97 billion in deals by the Tawazun Council and numerous high-profile engagements, the event underscored its significance as a premier platform for the global defence and security industry.

The 17th edition of IDEX was inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence, while His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, inaugurated the eighth edition of NAVDEX. Organized by the ADNEC Group in collaboration with the UAE Ministry of Defence and Tawazun Council, this year’s event is the largest in its history since its inception in 1993—a testament to the growing importance of the UAE as a global hub for defence and security innovation.

 Landmark Deals and Strategic Partnerships

The highlight of the opening day was the announcement by the Tawazun Council of AED 3.825 billion in local contracts secured by the UAE Ministry of Defence. These included nine agreements with UAE-based defence companies, reflecting the nation’s commitment to bolstering its domestic defence industry. Additionally, four international agreements worth AED 143.4 million were signed, bringing the total value of contracts on day one to AED 3.97 billion across 13 agreements. These deals underscore the strategic role of IDEX and NAVDEX in fostering collaborations that drive technological advancements and innovation in the defence sector.

The event also saw the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between leading defence organizations, further strengthening ties between global and regional industry players. These partnerships reaffirm the UAE’s position as a leader in defence and security, leveraging its state-of-the-art infrastructure and forward-thinking leadership to facilitate meaningful collaborations.

Focus on Emerging Threats and Technological Advancements

A key feature of IDEX 2025 is its focus on addressing emerging security challenges through innovation and collaboration. The event’s “IDEX Talks” series prominently highlighted CBRNE (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive) defence, bringing together leading experts and specialists to discuss strategies for advanced preparedness and rapid response. These discussions explored innovations in detection, protection, and decontamination technologies, reflecting the growing need for comprehensive solutions to counter evolving threats. The inclusion of these topics underscores the role of IDEX as a global hub for addressing complex security challenges.

NAVDEX 2025, running concurrently with IDEX, has further solidified its reputation as a premier platform for naval defence and maritime security. The exhibition welcomed high-ranking military officials, government delegations, and industry leaders, with 33 naval vessels from 22 countries on display. These vessels, including newly manufactured ships, highlight the cutting-edge capabilities of the Emirati defence industry and its growing influence on the global stage.

The purpose-built exhibition hall at NAVDEX showcased a wide range of maritime defence technologies, from propulsion systems and missile manufacturers to drone developers and shipbuilders. Reflecting the increasing role of digitalization in modern warfare, exhibitors incorporated virtual reality (VR) testing and simulation technologies, enabling visitors to interact with next-generation naval solutions in an immersive environment. This focus on digital transformation highlights the industry’s shift toward integrating advanced technologies into defence capabilities.

A Platform for Collaboration and Innovation

IDEX and NAVDEX 2025 continue to serve as catalysts for collaboration, bringing together established industry leaders and emerging innovators to showcase the latest advancements in defence and security. The exhibitions span land, air, sea, and cybersecurity technologies, addressing both civil and defence applications. By fostering an environment of knowledge exchange and partnership, the events reinforce the UAE’s commitment to driving innovation and building a resilient global defence ecosystem.

To complement the exhibitions, visitors are treated to daily performances by distinguished military bands, adding a ceremonial and cultural dimension to the event. At IDEX, the Ministry of Defence Band captivates audiences with a repertoire of patriotic and military compositions, showcasing the rich heritage and discipline of the UAE Armed Forces. Similarly, the Abu Dhabi Police Band at NAVDEX delivers engaging performances, further enhancing the visitor experience.
