This year, against the backdrop of a world emerging from the shadows of a pandemic and grappling with geopolitical tensions, the Airshow assumes an even greater significance. It serves as a bellwether for the global aerospace industry, providing insight into trends that are not just reshaping the industry, but also redefining how we envision the skies above us. From its inception in 1948, Farnborough has evolved beyond a mere airshow; it is now a dynamic amalgamation of innovation, commerce, and collaboration, truly encapsulating the spirit of the aerospace industry. This year, from July 22nd through July 26th, an astounding 80,000 visitors will descend upon this iconic airfield, eager to witness the latest advancements in aviation technology, network with peers, and partake in a whirlwind of product demonstrations and aircraft displays.
A Melting Pot of Global Talent and Innovation
What makes Farnborough truly special is its ability to bring together an unparalleled gathering of decision-makers from every facet of the aerospace sector. Senior executives from major commercial aerospace and defence companies mingle with military delegations, government officials, airline representatives, aircraft owners, lessors, and a plethora of investor groups. This is where influential conversations take flight, where partnerships blossom, and where massive deals are brokered amidst the roar of jet engines in the sky.

The production of the MAX aircraft has encountered hurdles, significantly impacting its supply chain and creating ripples that touch hundreds of companies involved in manufacturing components and systems.
Airbus, a titan in the aerospace industry, is currently navigating the choppy waters of supply chain challenges. While the strains they face may not be as dramatic as those seen in other sectors, they are nonetheless significant. The company has openly acknowledged that the duress affecting many of its suppliers has had a noticeable impact on its operations, resulting in financial reverberations that cannot be overlooked.

The air may be turbulent now, but with commitment, ingenuity, and a focus on its workforce, Airbus is poised to soar to new heights.
Exciting Prospects in the Aircraft Ordering Market: A Dive into the Middle East and Mediterranean Landscape
The buzz in the aviation industry has reached a fever pitch, particularly surrounding the Middle East and the eastern Mediterranean. With major players poised to assert their dominance, this year’s aircraft ordering cycle promises to be nothing short of exhilarating. As airlines ramp up their operations to meet burgeoning travel demand, every glance at the horizon reveals a tantalizing possibility of monumental deals that could redefine the fleet dynamics across the region.
One of the most significant anticipated orders comes from none other than Turkish Airlines. With ambitions to bolster its in-service fleet to an impressive 810 aircraft by 2033, the airline is fully committed to expanding its horizons. Just last year, Turkish Airlines made headlines with a substantial order of 234 aircraft, primarily placed in December. Interestingly, while they sought additional aircraft from lessors, they strategically held back on adding Boeing aircraft directly to their order book. However, the winds of change are blowing. After two decades without an order at major events like Farnborough or Paris, the industry is abuzz with the possibility of a hefty order from Turkish Airlines for 150 B737 MAXs and 75 B787s. The exact timing for finalizing the MAX portion may require some further negotiations, but the excitement surrounding this potential deal is palpable!
Over in Israel, EL AL Airlines is also stirring the pot with discussions for up to 30 B737 MAX aircraft. As the airline aims to enhance its operational capacity, the addition of a few widebodies would certainly not go amiss amidst growing demand. Meanwhile, Libyan Airlines is set to firm up its prior announcement for 6 A320/A321neo aircraft, marking a significant step in revitalizing its fleet and opening new travel opportunities.
Venturing further into the Gulf region, Qatar Airways is another key player positioned to make a splash. With a robust backlog of A350s, 787s, and 777Xs—totalling 104 aircraft—the airline may very well seek to expand and replenish its widebody fleet to stay competitive. As neighbouring airlines enhance their offerings amid ongoing supply chain challenges, an order for an additional 100-150 A350s and B777Xs is on the horizon. The excitement intensifies with the prospect of options potentially pushing that total to 200 units!
Of course, we can’t overlook Emirates! This powerhouse airline is expected to follow up with a blockbuster order of 100 A350-1000 aircraft—once Rolls-Royce successfully resolves lingering reliability issues. While last year’s Dubai event didn’t yield this anticipated order, Farnborough might be a bit too soon. Nevertheless, the hype surrounding Emirates’ potential order keeps the aviation community on high alert.
Looking at Saudi Arabia, two emerging carriers are expected to make their mark with substantial acquisitions. Riyadh Air is rumoured to be in the final stages of placing an order for approximately 100 narrowbody aircraft, which may include either Boeing MAX or Airbus Neo options. Flyadeal is also in the mix, aiming for about 20 widebodies, potentially comprised of A330neos or B787s. The intricacies of these orders suggest a strategic division between firm commitments and options, much like last year’s impressive delivery patterns.

As stalwarts like Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Emirates contemplate their next moves, the excitement in the aviation industry is palpable. This presents a unique challenge: not only must companies locate and train technicians familiar with modern technologies, but they must also cultivate skilled workers who can navigate the intricacies of traditional aircraft systems. Aerobility Takes Flight at FIA 2024!
Get ready for an exhilarating showcase of innovation and inclusion as Aerobility, a groundbreaking UK-based aviation charity, prepares to dazzle audiences at the FIA. This year is exceptionally special as Aerobility proudly celebrates the debut of its latest fleet member, the home-built two-seat Zenair CH750 STOL aircraft, G-ICAN. Just recently, this remarkable plane made its inaugural flight from Blackbushe Airport to Farnborough Airport, marking a significant milestone under a special permit from the UK Light Aircraft Association (LAA).
The ‘Building a Dream’ project, which began at the Farnborough International Airshow in 2018, has united disabled and able-bodied volunteers in an inspiring mission to assemble an aircraft “one rivet at a time.” With an outpouring of support from corporate sponsors and individuals, this initiative underscores the transformative power of collaboration and community. Aerobility is thrilled to unveil the details of this inspiring journey, which began with the enthusiastic support of team members from the legendary Red Arrows!
At FIA 2024, diversity, equality, and inclusion (DE&I) take center stage, and Aerobility is leading the charge! With a dynamic 20-strong team led by the passionate CEO Mike Miller-Smith MBE and Advocacy Manager Harvey Matthewson, Aerobility is committed to creating a more inclusive aviation landscape. Harvey, a disabled flier himself, will take the spotlight on Wednesday, July 24, at 14:00 in Hall 3, Area 3100 for a panel session titled “Advancing Diversity and Inclusion in Aerospace.” This session, organized by Aerospace Xelerated, will highlight the importance of DE&I as a core value for organizations and will conclude with a Q&A featuring Mike Miller-Smith himself!
In an exciting expansion of its mission, Aerobility is collaborating with the UK Space Agency and King’s College London to investigate ways to make space travel accessible for people with physical disabilities. “Aerobility connects the disabled community with academia to ensure that the really important questions are asked and answered in order to enable the disability community to travel into space like everyone else,” Mike Miller-Smith notes. Attendees at FIA 2024 will have the chance to witness live research that furthers this groundbreaking endeavour at Aerobility’s stand!
