February 3, 2025, marks a significant milestone in the aviation industry: the 10th anniversary of the first flight of the KC-390 Millennium, Embraer’s next-generation multi-mission tactical transport aircraft. This aircraft has not only redefined the standards of military airlift but has also revolutionized the global defence landscape with its cutting-edge technology, exceptional performance, and unparalleled versatility. A decade after its maiden flight in Gavião Peixoto, Brazil, the KC-390 Millennium stands as a testament to Embraer’s commitment to innovation and excellence in aerospace engineering.
The KC-390 Millennium’s first flight on February 3, 2015, lasting 1 hour and 25 minutes, marked the beginning of a new chapter in military aviation. The maiden flight allowed the crew to evaluate the aircraft’s flight characteristics and performance, confirming its potential as a game-changer in the tactical airlift category. Equipped with advanced fly-by-wire technology, the KC-390 has since demonstrated its ability to perform a wide range of missions under the most demanding conditions, proving its robustness, flexibility, and reliability.
Milestones of Technological and Operational Achievement
The KC-390 Millennium achieved a significant breakthrough in October 2018 with the first flight of the series-produced aircraft and the receipt of its Type Certificate from the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC). This certification not only validated the aircraft’s advanced technological capabilities but also paved the way for military certification, solidifying its position as a next-generation platform for global defence forces.
In the years since, the KC-390 has steadily gained traction in international markets, earning the trust of leading military organizations around the world. The signing of a contract with Portugal in 2019 for the acquisition of five KC-390 aircraft was a pivotal moment, followed shortly by the delivery of the first unit to the Brazilian Air Force. These milestones were further bolstered in 2020 when the KC-390 received two prestigious awards from *Aviation Week*: the Grand Laureate in the Defence category and the Laureate Award for “Best New Product” in the Defence category. These accolades underscored the aircraft’s innovative design, operational efficiency, and global appeal.

The KC-390’s success continued with Hungary’s decision to procure the aircraft in 2020, marking its growing prominence in Europe. Portugal and Hungary, both NATO members, were instrumental in showcasing the KC-390’s capabilities to other European nations. By 2022, the Netherlands followed suit, and in 2023, Austria, the Czech Republic, and the Republic of Korea also selected the KC-390 to enhance their defence capabilities. Most recently, in 2024, Sweden, Slovakia, and an undisclosed customer joined the growing list of nations opting for this state-of-the-art aircraft.
A Proven Platform for Global Defence
Since entering operation with the Brazilian Air Force in 2019, the KC-390 Millennium has demonstrated exceptional reliability and performance. The current operational fleet of 10 aircraft, which includes seven with the Brazilian Air Force, two with the Portuguese Air Force, and one with the Hungarian Air Force, has accumulated over 16,300 flight hours. With a mission capability rate of 93% and mission completion rates exceeding 99%, the KC-390 has set new benchmarks for productivity and operational efficiency in its category.
The versatility of the KC-390 Millennium is one of its most defining attributes. Capable of performing a wide range of missions, including cargo and troop transport, medical evacuation, aerial refuelling, and humanitarian assistance, the aircraft meets the diverse needs of modern defence forces. Its advanced design ensures low operating costs, while its robust construction allows it to operate in challenging environments, from unpaved runways to disaster-stricken regions.
A Vision for the Future
Reflecting on the KC-390 Millennium’s achievements, Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, aptly described the aircraft as “an unbeatable combination of versatility, robustness, and flexibility.” Over the past decade, the KC-390 has proven itself to be the ideal choice for nations seeking a reliable and cost-effective multi-mission tactical transport solution. Its growing presence in NATO and beyond highlights its ability to meet the evolving demands of global defence forces.
A New Chapter in Aerospace Collaboration: Embraer and Mahindra’s Partnership
The defence and aerospace sectors have witnessed a significant milestone with the announcement of a new partnership between Embraer, the renowned Brazilian aerospace manufacturer, and Mahindra Defense Systems, a key player in India’s defence industry. In early 2024, both companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Brazilian Embassy in New Delhi, formalizing their cooperation to supply the C-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF). This collaboration highlights not only Embraer’s commitment to fostering global partnerships but also Mahindra’s role in propelling India’s “Make in India” initiative.

The C-390 Millennium is a state-of-the-art medium transport aircraft renowned for its versatility and advanced operational capabilities. With a payload capacity of 26 tons, superior speed of 470 knots, and adaptability for various missions such as troop transport, medical evacuation, firefighting, and air-to-air refuelling, the aircraft offers unmatched capabilities to meet the IAF’s needs. The partnership aims to leverage Embraer’s decades-long legacy of engineering excellence and Mahindra’s expertise in India’s defence industry to meet the growing demands of the Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) Program, which could see a procurement of 40 to 80 aircraft by the IAF.
This MoU symbolizes a mutually beneficial collaboration. While Embraer’s advanced technology and global experience will enhance the IAF’s operational capacity, Mahindra’s alignment with India’s industrial strategies ensures a boost in indigenous production and defence self-reliance. The two companies have also expressed an intent to establish a C-390 aircraft center in the region, further solidifying this partnership as a harbinger of industrial and technological growth.
Moreover, Embraer’s global presence and its track record of delivering over 9,000 aircraft since its inception in 1969 underscore the company’s reliability and innovation. As the world’s leading manufacturer of commercial jets with up to 150 seats, Embraer’s involvement in this endeavour marks a significant step forward in India’s defence modernization efforts.
This partnership bridges the strengths of Brazilian and Indian aerospace industries, fostering a new era of cooperation. If successful, it will not only enhance the operational prowess of the Indian Air Force but also contribute to building a robust defence manufacturing ecosystem in India, setting a high standard for global aerospace collaborations.
As the KC-390 Millennium enters its second decade, its legacy as a transformative platform in military aviation is firmly established. Embraer’s dedication to innovation and performance has not only expanded its customers’ operational capabilities but also set a new standard for tactical airlift. With a growing fleet and an expanding list of international operators, the KC-390 Millennium is poised to continue its remarkable journey as a cornerstone of modern defence operations.
