Ministry Of Defence Signs Contract Worth Over Rs 900 Crore For Normal Refit Of Sindhukirti Submarine At Hindustan Shipyard Limited

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has taken another step towards the goal of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, or self-reliant India, by signing a contract worth Rs 934 crore for the Normal Refit of Sindhukirti Submarine at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam. The contract was signed on March 13, 2023, and the project involves more than 20 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), potentially leading to the employment generation of 1,000 man-days per day for the project duration.

Sindhukirti is a 3rd Kilo Class Diesel Electric Submarine that is expected to become combat-worthy after the refit and join the active submarine fleet of the Indian Navy. This refit has been offloaded to develop alternate repair facilities for submarines and is a further step towards undertaking a Medium refit with Life Certification at HSL. The contract is worth over Rs 900 crore and marks another significant step in India’s quest for self-reliance.

The project’s execution involves a collaboration between HSL, the Indian Navy, and more than 20 MSMEs. As mentioned, the Normal Refit of Sindhukirti Submarine at HSL in Visakhapatnam is expected to generate employment opportunities for the local population and boost the Indian economy. With this contract, MoD continues demonstrating its commitment to self-reliance, aligning with the government’s vision of making India a global manufacturing hub.
